Abstract and National Symbols on U.S. Airmails

It is 1968. A new simple design appears for the international air rate. Stamps most often have designs of national importance, and the "USA" design of this issue fulfills another need, clearly identifying the country of issue. The silhouette form of the 4 engine jet also clearly tells us this is Airmail.

This design is a very interesting combination of symbols. Clearly a representation of the American flag dominates. The center design of a jet aircraft seen front-on tells us this is Airmail. Also an added feature, the two hemishphere views of the planet are in the positions of the engines of the aircraft. Clever design in a small space.
