Question About an Airmail Stamp

Image of Airmail stamp, C40 commemoorating the bicentennial of ALEXANDRIA, VA, 1949

Really odd topic for an airmail stamp! The wings on this U.S. Airmail commemorative tells us this is AIR MAIL, as does the distinct red color. But here is something we'd like to know: This stamp was issued in 1949 to commemorate the bicentennial of Alexandria, Virginia. Alexandria is not a city that we know to be asssociated with Airmail, or is it? If you can shed some light on Alexandria, please email!
