Issued in 1964, this stamp has an engraved portait of Robert Goddard to the left, and a launch of a Mercury/Atlas rocket to the right. This is the first U.S. airmail stamp with a space topic. Robert Goddard developed the first liquid fuel rocket, and launched it in Massachusetts.

This a very well known and popular issue, the 1969 Moon Landing airmail.

We find it interesting that there are so few U.S. airmail issues devoted to space topics. Interestingly, the situation changes with the issue of Express and Priority Mail rate issues. These have illustrated the Space Shuttle for several rate changes now.
