During 1959, International Geophysical Year the original signers of the Antarctic Treaty began the signature process. The treaty became effective in 1961, hence the 30th Anniversay is during 1991, the year the stamp was issued.
The continent of Antartica has become a key site in the study of global climate change, where loss of ice mass can be observed and quantified. The loss of ice, in fact one of many Climate Reality metrics describing the state of our planet.
