John Muir commemorative 5 cent stamp, Scott Catalog No. 1245, Issued in 1964

This stamp is a beautiful engraved design in two colors: green, and brown to capture two colors of the California Redwoods.

When issued in 1964, the word conservationist is the term to describe Muir, though today, the term environmentalist might also be applied.

Muir wrote about his exploration and observations of California. In The Mountains of California he describes his observations of California from the Coastal Range to the Sierra Nevada to the east.
