The Peace in Outer Space U. N. Commemorative Stamp: 1963

Image of the UN commemorative space stamp, Scott Cat. No. C8

United Nations Airmail, 8 cents, Scott Catalog No. C-8, Issued in June 17, 1963

This remarkable design was first issued on June 17, 1963 - near the dawn of the space age.

At this point the United States and the Soviet Union have orbited humans in low earth orbit, and launched numerious satelites. But the Cold War is on. In the United Nations, there is hope for the peaceful use of outer space. In this simple design, the streak, represents humanity, or the hopes of humanity. In the stamp design there are stars, and clusters of distant galexies.

Humanity, and human spirit will have a long way to go to reach the stars; that isn't a bad thing.
