The U.S. spacecraft hardware was designed from Apollo era hardware. There was just a single crew launched from the Soviet Union, followed by a single launch from the U.S. On the U.S. side, this was to be the last use of Apollo era space hardware. The Soviet Union, on the other hand to this day operates from the same basic Soyuz platform.

This pair of stamps was also issued with minor variations with a postal issue from the Soviet Union to commemorate the same event.
