Robert Goddard, 8 cents, Scott Catalog No. C-69, Issued in 1964

The subject of this airmail issue is Dr. Robert H. Goddard who developed the liquid fuel rocket. The first successful prototype of the liquid fuel rocket launched by Goddard took place near Worcester, Massachusetts.`As his rocket tests became larger he moved his operation from Massachusetts to New Mexico. This stamp was first issued in Roswell, New Mexico in 1964.

This airmail stamp is a two-colored engraved design. On the left is a portait of Robert Goddard, to the right is a Mercury/Atlas early in flight, moments following ignition. The Atlas booster is liquid-fueled, that method of rocket propulaion developed by Robert Goddard.
