The U.S. Airmail Stamps at the

Dawn of the Jet Age

On October 26,1958 Pan American inaugurated trans-atlatic service using the Boeing 707 aircraft. Also in 1958, the Douglas Aircraft DC-8 first flew. Both are 4 engine jet aircraft, both began a long history of jet service for passengers, cargo, and air mail.

These 2 stamps began a tradition in design style as well. The jet aircraft silhouette would become an icon on many subsequent airmail stamps.
